Those who revere ignorance enter the blind darkness, but those who are attached to knowledge (vidya) enter into a darkness that seems even greater than that.

andham tamah pravishanti ye ‘vidyam upasate
tato bhuya iva te tamo ya u vidyayam ratah

– Isa Upanishad

Common to most of the religions born in India is that Ignorance is not bliss, but knowledge (vidya) is. But here we have something very interesting. Those attached to the accumulation knowledge without realisation go deeper into darkness. The Upanishad recognises that this can lead to ego, and pride which only leads in the wrong direction.

We must strive to realise our true identity and relinquish pride and ego which only leads to deeper darkness. Desire only leads to further desire, but freedom comes only from awakening. May we go from Darkness to light, from death to immortality.
